A brief stopover in headline heaven

If this isn’t the best sports headline in the history of the world, then I haven’t seen it.

Scotland’s Inverness has a soccer team named Inverness Caledonian Thistle which, because it is a bit of a mouthful, is usually shortened to Caley. Back in 2000, Caley met the legendary team Celtic in a Scottish Cup tie and, although Celtic were hot favourites to win, Caley pulled off a stunning 3-1 upset. Of course, this was big news, so you can understand that quite a bit of sports news time was devoted to reliving that glory. No less than The Sun newspaper ran with the headline: ‘SUPER CALEY GO BALLISTIC CELTIC ARE ATROCIOUS.’

On the other hand in 2002 the Adelaide Advertiser came up with a headline almost as good when it reported that the captain of what England is pleased to call its ‘cricket team’ was close to quitting: ‘THE REIGN OF HUSSAIN IS MAINLY ON THE WANE.’

A subeditor on the mighty Byron Shire Echo comes up with a headline for the ages after the hooker for the Mullumbimby Giants league team scored three tries against the local Marist Brothers in a 38-4 win: ‘HAPPY HOOKER BLOWS PAPISTS.’
